“ I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.”Stephen Covey
Decisions, again it’s that time of the year where some of us are struggling taking this, struggling taking the most important decision of our lives. Yes, I am talking about those who have just passed 12th class and feels like every person and even ever thing is looking towards them to tell them what they want to do with their lives.
For those who have decided on their career, its not a problem, but for those who are still confused on what to choose, its scary. And they should be scared, because this is the time for taking the appropriate career decision.
Especially, the students of science stream get confused on what career or course to choose after 12th, if they are not opting for career in engineering or medical fields or they can’t get into it because of less marks or low ranks in competitive exams like NEET, IIT JEE, AIEEE and many other state competitive exams.
This Career Confusion is all because as far as you can remember you were always told about a doctor or engineer, if many of you family members are from science stream. Even some of them might be in this field and some might be preparing, so whenever you looked up to someone, you were reminded of just two words, medical or engineering.
If go back in 90s or early 20s, there were not many career options to choose from, and if you wanted a secured and best paid job, then only these two careers in science stream were able to meet the expectation. Thus, each and every parent wants their child to be in one of these fields so that his/her future can be secured, and they are the on who can easily influence your career decision.
But, now the scenario is different, we can move on from this medical or engineering option.
The reason why you got low rank or less marks in competitive field is because you are not interested in its core concepts and that’s why you are unable to give your best. You can give you 100% only when you like what you do. If you are doing it on the advise of your parents, friends or any other, then the most important thing is to listen to your inner voice.
We can conclude, that you are not opting career in these two fields because either you don’t have skill for it or you are not interested in one or the other subject or work area and cant proceed further, means you have no interest in it.
How to find your Dream Career?
Don’t get paranoid by these two courses, there is lot more to explore and you can easily find a career option that you are interested in to build up your dream career.
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”Steve Jobs
Take inspiration from the above quote and find out what you love to do. There is no problem if you want to change your career preference or in the broad sense if you want to change your stream. Even courses are being designed like this that can accommodate other stream students if you have a passion for it.
To take an example for not settling down unless find your interest, let me share my experience as I took this very seriously when I was in 12th and took my career decision.
My journey to my Dream Career
Back in 2002-03, I was a PCM student having the dream of becoming an Engineer, but as I got deep into its subjects and course, I realised that I am not for this course because I am not interested in it. I opted for PCM because I loved Maths and problem-solving skills, that’s why I liked a little bit physics also but chemistry was hell for me. Whenever I tried to open its book, I could only see demons of carbon table and other formulas.
I also realized that I can’t spend time in research laboratories or working as a geek, so I had to switch but the problem before me was also the same that you are facing, How and what to choose from various career options available? There were only few choices at that time and there were no unconventional career options, so you had to compromise a little bit. The only way to find about careers was reading magazine, newspapers or talking to people of different fields as internet was not in so much use, the time was of cyber cafes.
After lots of research I got interested in CAT (MBA Entrance for IIMs’). It had everything, my favourite maths, my interest in business and economics and full utilisation of my problem-solving skills. Thus, I made the bold decision of changing my stream from science PCM to Commerce.
Yes, I joined a simple B.Com course at a college of my home town. I started preparing for CAT but again when I was in my third year, my destiny allowed me to take turn. My father and my teacher suggested me to try CA, Chartered Accountancy as a career as I was good in accounts, problem solving and was hard working and calculations and figures fascinated me.
I got interested in it as I knew it is one of the toughest courses and if people were suggesting me to do that, then I might have the capability. I investigated all aspects of CA and found it quite interesting.
And again, my boat changed its course of direction.
As quoted ,” It is never too late to be what you might have been.”by George Eliot
Finally, I enrolled myself for CA Course and I am so happy to tell you all that I got engrossed in its subjects and found them as per my interests, that’s why I cleared all levels of CA in my first attempt and got saved from my demons.
I lived up to this quote
“I was once afraid of people saying, ‘Who does she think she is?’ Now I have the courage to stand and say ‘This is who I am’ “Oprah
So, stop thinking so much about engineering or medical, and find your interest area in science field or switch your stream to find you dream career, think out of the box, take a look into unconventional career options, and,
